GMG Tecchie Laptop Sessions: Social Networking

Event Info: A small session for the tecchie bods amongst us... these sessions will be quarterly and are aimed at a small gathering to discuss and share their knowledge, peer to peer learning idea in a safe setting - social speak not techno speak so everyone feels comfortable.... I enviasge this to be a good solid sub-sector group to GMG which will gradually form and thus network and thus collaborate on future projects and work. We will kick off with the discussion tonight focusing on social networking exploring the vast array of networks on offer and how it can benefit our own media businesses and indeed our clients... am sure conversation will digress and future topics are up to you (blogging?)! Chips and beer on us - just bring your laptop if you have one and your know how!

Phill, Bagpuss and Friends

Event Info: Author, broadcaster and comedian Phill Jupitus will be in Bristol on Sunday 27 July to host an Encounters Short Film Festival tribute to a hero of British animation - Oliver Postgate - and his best-loved characters, including BAGPUSS, THE CLANGERS, POGLE’S WOOD and NOGGIN THE NOG. The afternoon of television nostalgia is taking place at Watershed, Bristol, (3.30pm start) to mark the 50th anniversary of Oliver Postgate’s entry into stop-motion and the birth of Smallfilms, the animation company he founded with Peter Firmin. Award-winning animator Barry Purves will be among those contributing to an affectionate and light-hearted look back at Oliver Postgate’s career and creations, with the help of film clips and anecdotes from the audience. Tickets are £8 (£6 concessions)

Event Info: Seminars for 2008 Location: South West Regional Dates & Times: Friday 27 June 2008 – Hall for Cornwall, Truro 10.00am – 1.00pm Friday 12 September 2008 – Brewhouse, Taunton 10.00am – 1.00pm Thursday 13 November 08 – City Hall, Salisbury 10.00am – 1.00pm If you are considering making an application to Grants for the arts, this seminar will help you decide whether you can make a strong enough case against the criteria of the fund, if so, give you the confidence to ensure that you are able to submit the strongest possible application. The seminar will cover all aspects of the scheme but will concentrate on two particular parts of making an application; the creation of the proposal, and setting out the budget. Our priority is to provide advice for individual artists, but you are welcome to attend if you are a member of an organisation and the information will be equally relevant. We will not be able to enter into detailed discussion on individual applications, but the seminar leader will be available to give advice for a short period of time following the seminars.

Three Day Screenwriting Workshop (SS013)

Event Info: What makes a good script, from storytelling to formatting? How do you stop people losing interest half way through your film? This three day workshop, led by Sam Morrison from Evil Genius, will look at all aspects of storytelling for the screen. Consisting of informal and fun writing exercises, clips of both live-action and animation and group discussions , the overall aim of the workshop will be to enlighten and enthuse rather than tie the writer to rigid storytelling structures -although those will be covered too. By the end of three days participants will have a firm grasp of how to get their ideas into an original script and avoid the pitfalls of bad screenwriting. 10 places available Dates: 21 - 23 July 2008 Price: £150 (20% discount available for UWE staff, all full-time students, unwaged, and UWE alumni members)

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to learn how to write, shoot and edit film through a series of professional level practical workshops. Our philosophy is that you only learn film making by making films. From the first day you will be engaged in the production of your own film. Assisted by producers, script writers and directors you will learn all the script-to-screen visual and emotional interpretation skills you need to make a great film. Working with professional actors, camera crew and industry standard 16mm equipment will ensure high production values. The Arts Institute shares a passion for the art of film making. It has one of the most innovative and dynamic film schools in Europe. We have a distinguished alumni from courses in film and in animation. Our alumni include; Suri Krishnamma, whose work is unique in that his student films won two BAFTA Best Short film nominations. Craig McCall, whose ‘Persistence of Vision’ was shown at the 2003 Oscars.

Behaviour Management and Youth Arts Training

Event Info: Artsplan, the training and publications department of Artswork and the in-house training provider of ENYAN (English National Youth Arts Network) is pleased to be delivering our ‘Behaviour Management and Youth Arts’ course at the South West Artsplan Training Centre. The course looks into improving skills, knowledge and experience in order to develop an understanding of behavioural management and takes a look at the issues and barriers that are faced when undertaking Youth Arts projects. This course is set up and led by experienced and knowledgeable youth arts specialists. It explores the practical aspects of behavioural management: health and safety issues, risk assessment and achieving key objectives. It aims to promote a style of engaging with young people that encourages positive behaviour to the benefit of all involved.
