Ideas & communication skills to help Media SMEs
Date: 26th Mar 2008
What a diverse and packed evening! This event brought lots of new faces, even tickling the fancy of other SWScreen cluster members who travelled up from Cornwall and Bristol! Hugh Mason flew in to offer members finance and advice which his company provides exclusively to creative industry SMEs to help their owners build and realise value... His company has raised or invested directly >£10m since start-up, engaging with over 1,200 SMEs in the UK, Singapore and Netherlands. Hugh's specialism is building wealth in the creative sector through public sector programmes. He also is an expert in TV/Film, Design and Online business support. Following training as a documentary TV producer-director with the BBC (we saw the funny pics to prove it!), Hugh then founded and grew a multiple-award-winning broadcast TV production company. Finding himself as interested in the business side of running a creative company as he had previously been making films, Hugh co-founded Pembridge Partners in 2001. Instead of making complex stories about science accessible to non-specialist audiences, Hugh now applies his strategy, ideas and communication skills to help Creative Industries Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to visualise their futures, set a path for growth and plan their way to success.... See the pdf for the raw basics from his powerpoint and contact details....

GMG January Event: Gloucestershire Skill Swap
Date: 30th Jan 2008
With funding from Knowledge West, The Gloucestershire Media Group has partnered up with academics from The University of Gloucestershire and The West EBusiness Group... Flash, Ming, Swish, Gif, Javascript, Silverlight, SVG and lots of other tecchie words fllled the air of the Beehive on Wednesday night as GMG launched the quarterly meets of the all new Gloucestershire Skill Swap.. The idea is that the group is open to all – anyone who considers themselves working in or interested in being a part of a grassroots community group of new media practitioners and thinkers who are willing to come together to share their knowledge – the focus of the group will be quarterly events hosted here at The Beehive, but in the interim the group will have an online presence... My Aims: Loosely based on a Community of Practice model (Wenger, 2004), the group will be democratically self-directing with a voluntary co-ordinator (at present Emma Heathcote –James, who is the bridge between GMG and the University, but am happy for some enthusiastic member to take this over and to work closely alongside) – we also need some tecchie bods to create a website type forum to link us all together inbetween meetings… I want this group to be a one stop shop for members needing advice and so forth in a knowledge share kind of way.. Membership is voluntary and the group will be self sufficient and thus there will be no charge for membership or attendance at meetings… the idea of it being informal and meeting up over a beer type of arrangement. I feel the Beehive is a perfect venue and they have agreed to offer this room to us free of charge for the group. Eventually I would want a range of sectors to be encouraged and represented (industry, academia, government etc) at such meetings... When the group meets a variety of learning methods will be employed in line with the proposed subject matter and learning objectives of the members. In between the events, the co-ordinator bases future events around exploring the knowledge requirements of the group and then reaching consensus. Following consensus, the co-ordinator plays the role of event marketer, manager and host. All of the virtual work is co-ordinated through freely available virtual collaboration tools…. All this is to discussed this evening of what you want the group to be and how it should evolve….. Email me your thoughts emma@thegmg.org

April Event: Downing St comes to Cheltenham
Date: 25th Apr 2007
So, what can the www do for whoever's in power? What roles are pod and vod casts playing in the political world and what does digital communications mean to government? Ever wondered what it looks like behind the famous front door of 10 Downing Street? Check out the interactive tour on the Prime Minister's website which was developed using cutting-edge technology, you can swoop down the Grand Staircase with its portraits of past PMs, take a virtual wander around the beautiful State Rooms or see inside the Cabinet Room, where so many important decisions have been made... But fun things aside - the need to empower local communities is a matter of cross party consensus. Yet, although we as a general public have more access to information and ways of communicating with each other than ever before, Government still struggles with how to communicate effectively, particularly at local levels, and especially with socially excluded groups.... Is this where the www is a godsend? This evening were are joined by Jimmy Leach who is Head of Digital Communication for the Prime Ministers office at No.10. and who divulged all the fun things that go on behind that famous black door..... Especially new tecchie developments such as the two-way dialogue between central govt and the electorate and those infamous e-petitions.... See Simon's blog of the night http://simondickson.wordpress.com/2007/04/26/can-no10s-new-web-enthusiasm-survive-transition/ and Jimmy's website is http://www.pm.gov.uk

The Geekalicious Sam Smith (of What is Web 2.0? fame) returned back to talk to us again - this time on a tecchie studded night entitled "More than words". As we move towards an ‘on demand’ culture, Sam explained how we can take advantage of the web’s capacity to offer visitors a truly multimedia experience... We looked at the difference between streamed media and also had an idiots guide on how to embed different types of audio and video content into our website, highlighting some of the positives and pitfalls involved of varying formats.... it all tied in rather nicely to January's Green Screen and April's Blue Casting event....! Pecha Kucha was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. But as we all know, give a mike to a creative and you'll be trapped for hours... so the key to Pecha Kucha is its patented system for avoiding this fate! 15 GMG members each had up to 5 minutes on the stage to show and sells their wares.... We had such a varied mix from stunt men to composers, writers to cameramen, directors to facilities, graphic designers to filmmakers, new media bods to art directors..... August Masterclass: Summer in the Snow
Date: 30th Aug 2006
Snow Business is the world leader in the supply of artificial snow for motion pictures… and they’re just down the road in Stroud! These guys have been creating fake flakes for more 24 years – and chances are, if you've seen snow, frost or ice on the TV or big screen during that time, from a single snowflake to a terrifyingly safe avalanche… chances are it'll have been a special effect created by them... The team boasts that they are involved with a film set somewhere in the world, every single working day of the year and this evening we had an inside glimpse at the differing types of machines and snow products at the Snow Mill, the international HQ of the company – from outside foam blowers to burning candles, polymer to C90, paper, starch and paraffin wax…. With more types of snow than the Eskimo and Inuit languages have words for (their range consists of over 140 types of snow, frost and ice materials!) it took most of us back to being like kids in a sweet shop! Big thanks to all the team, but especial thanks to Darcy Crownshaw for being such a fabulous host and presenting the first masterclass on the History of Snow and to Andrew Carruthers for the second, showing how it can be done on a budget!

Intellectual Property & Copyright Law Masterclass
Date: 30th Nov 2005
Held in the main lecture theatre of Pittville Campus, the first seminar led by Richard McMorris, a solicitor with corporate media law firm, Wiggin LLP. Entitled “The Beginners Guide…”, his presentation gave us a basic introduction to intellectual property rights, why we have them and how they can be exploited. The focus will be on those types of intellectual property which are most relevant to content production and distribution including copyright and trade marks. The session will began with a brief exploration of the reasons for having intellectual property rights at all and what the law is designed to protect, and went on to look at how copyright works are created, how to work out who owns the copyright in a given work and what being a copyright owner means legally and practically. Attention was then turned to the different ways in which intellectual property rights can be divided up in order to enable rights owners to achieve maximum exploitation of their work together with an overview of the way in which trade mark law operates in the UK. Following drinks and a buffet in the gallery, Part 2 was led by Guy Sheppard, a film and television solicitor also from Wiggin. This seminar was called “What can I do to protect my Work?" and gave practical guidance on what steps writers, directors and producers can take to protect the intellectual property rights they create and which had been outlined in Richard's seminar in Part 1. The session began with a summary of the law of confidentiality which often provides an extra, or an alternative, legal protection to intellectual property rights holders in the industry, and then went on to provide practical tips that such rights holders often find useful and included a brief summary of the Code of Practice framework to which some UK broadcasters subscribe. Both Powerpoint Presentations are available to download as one file in the link below. For more information see www.wiggin.co.uk

Following a great presentation by Clare Reddington of SE3D (www.se3d.co.uk) on the future of 3D rendering over broadband, Mark Leaver (SWScreen) and Greg Browning(GMG) outlined the current strands of funding available – download Greg’s presentation from the website. With the deadline to apply for any of the funding schemes being the 7th October, any who didn't make it please contact The GMG or SWScreen with any questions.
