Nic Millington is the Chief Executive of The Rural Media Company, which he founded in 1992.

Rural Media’s vision is for a society where everyone has access to media to communicate, create and learn. Our mission is to empower people in rural communities by enabling them to communicate through creative media.

The Rural Media Company is an award winning media education and production organisation with a national reputation for its innovative, socially aware media and communications work. We value quality in what we do and how we do it, creativity and innovation, and diversity and equality. We believe in injecting energy and passion into what we do, making life interesting and fun and in putting people first. Our key aims are to:

• Enable rural communities to learn about and use media by participating in practical media education activities.
• Create and disseminate high quality media communications and educational resources.
• Ensure sustainability and growth of the organisation.

The organisation is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee and works across the UK with a significant geographic base in the rural West Midlands. Since its establishment in 1992 the organisation has steadily grown and now has a staff team of 18 (full and part time) and an annual turnover of around £600K. We work with five key client groups in rural areas:

• Young people
• Communities
• Marginalised groups, particularly Gypsies and Travellers
• Voluntary and community organisations
• Statutory bodies

Our key services are:
• Film and video production for voluntary and statutory sector agencies.
• Training and education in digital media production (video, sound, animation, web, photography, graphic design) for young people, communities and educators.
• Participatory media project design and delivery.
• Consultancy and advocacy on media development amongst community and education sectors.
• Information and advice for micro media businesses.
• Sales and distribution of media communications and education resources produced by The Rural Media Company.
• Qualitative research and evaluation through media.

Our current strategic business plan builds upon our strengths and consolidates and grows areas of work where we have a proven track record:

• Engaging with some of the most marginalized communities in the country, ensuring that diverse rural voices are heard and listened to.

• Pioneers in enabling rural communities to generate and broadcast their own media content.

• Consolidation of the organisation as one of the leading producers of young people’s media projects in the UK.

• Producer of video programmes which communicate the pace and impact of rural change from the point of view of those most affected by it.

• Authoritative producer of news, information and resources for the Gypsy and Traveller community.

• Provision of media literacy networks and support to teachers and youth workers in the West Midlands region.
