Directors: Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo (UK 1975. 96 mins)

In 1649 on St George’s Hill in Surrey dissident religious Diggers are squatting and planting crops. Their leader Gerrard Winstanley preaches equality and land rights for all while Parson Platt – who owns the land – disagrees. Winstanley’s persuasive arguments convince Mrs Platt but as his followers struggle against armed men and harsh weather, splinter group the Ranters take his ideas into dangerous territory.

This meticulously accurate and luminously filmed monochrome account of England’s first commune showed how relevant 17th century debate about a world turned upside down was to the 70s.
The film’s leading Ranter was played by Sid Rawle, a spokesman for the New Diggers, who went on to found Tipi Valley and the Peace Convoy. Restoration courtesy of the BFI National Archive brings it to the screen for a new generation. ‘The most mysteriously beautiful English film since the best of Michael Powell … and the best pre-twentieth-century historical film I can recall.’ Jonathan Rosenbaum, Film Comment

Anvil! the Story of Anvil (15)
Dir: Sacha Gervasi
(USA 2008. 80 mins)

Candian rockers Anvil rode the first wave of speed-metal. By the 80s their album ‘Metal on Metal’ was an inspiration for young bands like Metallica and Guns n’Roses but somehow the big time passed them by. Now they’re in their fifties, holding down day jobs still dreaming of stardom. Sounds like Spinal Tap? Yes indeed, but this is a real band and the documentary fly-on-the wall footage of their dismal European tour is both hilarious and touching.

Originally filming six individuals reading the poem Doubts by Rupert Brooke, he then returned to the shelter in February 2009 to interview these individuals about their own lives. The stories that unfold are honest personal tales of alcohol and drug addiction alongside the trials of rehousing and rehabilitation Following the screening, Oliver Guy-Watkins will host a short Q+A session. His exhibition Doubt in Gloucestershire runs in the Guildhall gallery from 2nd –6th June.

Dir: Franny Armstrong
(UK 2009. 92 mins)

In the devastated world of 2055 a lone archivist (Pete Postlethwaite) sifts through historical footage from 2007 searching for clues. Why did humanity fail to save itself from global warming? Perhaps if he can assemble a digital broadcast he can tell future societies – if there are any – what happens when you exploit a planet and ignore blindingly obvious warning signs about climate change.

Bhutan, Height of Happiness? (12A)
Dir: Brian Becker
(UK 2008. 52 mins)

Long thought of as a secluded paradise, Bhutan is renowned for rejecting economic prosperity in pursuit of ‘Gross National Happiness’. For centuries, its benevolent kings ignored technological advances, seeking to protect their people from outside influences, especially television. Then, overnight, 47 satellite stations descended on the kingdom. Can Bhutan’s mythical spiritual principles withstand this Western onslaught? The film makers will be hosting a discussion afterwards to answer questions arising from the film.

Subtitled: original language Spanish

Martin leaves his wife and the law firm where he works, and goes to live in a motorcaravan. While he is working in a car wash, attracting customers dressed as a bird, he meets Mabel. They are attracted to each other and eventually fall in love. Some time later Mabel finds out she is HIV positive. As Martin’s love helps her overcome successive bouts with death, Mabel’s love enables Martin to discover meaning in his own life.

Subtitled: original language Spanish
Beloved Mexican screen legend Katy Jurado lights up the screen one last time in her final film, the story of a special friendship that develops in 80s Mexico City between a solitary elderly woman and Jorge, a rebellious teen. Through the use of flashbacks, Jorge, now an adult, learns one last beautiful mystery about the person who played such an important role in his youth. Could it be that the old friend who taught him so much about life was none other than Esperanza Malagon Prieto, who in 1939 was the first Latin-American woman to win a Nobel Prize in Literature? This fascinating film won three awards, including the Audience Award, at the 2003 Trieste Festival of Latin American Cinema.

Dir Andrew Haigh.
(UK 2009. 75 mins)
Over six months Andrew Haigh worked with a group of London rent boys to create a semi-improvised drama based on their lives. Speaking their own words they are presented as they want to be seen. Sometimes explicit, sometimes awkward, this is a million miles from an idealised version of prostitution. The star is Greek Pete and we meet some of his clients as well as other rent boys. The lure of easy money is balanced with some alarming encounters and a keen sense of solidarity among the boys. They may gloss over some of the issues, but this is a privileged record of a sub-culture as never before seen on film.

Dir: Nick Moran
(UK 2008. 119 mins)
Joe Meek was the flamboyantly gay, tone deaf, songwriter-producer behind hits like ‘Just Like Eddie,’ ‘Johnny, Remember Me’ and ‘Telstar’. In his shambolic recording studio he created genuine musical alchemy before drugs and madness brought about his spectacular demise. This tune-filled dramatisation of his rise and fall amid the seamy 60s London music scene features a starry cast including Kevin Spacey as the money man and James Corden as the Tornadoes’ hapless drummer. Finally Newent’s most famous son gets his due.
(Poland 2007. 122 mins)
Subtitled; original language Polish
In 1940 fifteen thousand Polish officers were secretly massacred by Soviet troops in a Russian internment camp, a war crime which went unacknowledged for five decades. Wajda, whose own father died in the carnage, explores the impact of this national tragedy on various women whose loved ones never returned. With its mournful score (by Krzysztof Penderecki), muted cinematography and restrained performances this is a work of sober commemoration which builds to a startlingly horrific climax.
Johnny Depp plays charismatic gangster John Dillinger, whose audacious bank raids made him a hero in Depression-gripped America. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone except J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale). In this true-life folk tale Dillinger, declared Public Enemy Number One, finds himself up against the hardest, sneakiest opponents on the government’s payroll.
During World War II the Basterds, a group of Jewish-American soldiers led by half-Apache Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), are sent to occupied France on a mission to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. Pursued by a Jew-hunting Gestapo officer the Basterds make their way to Paris leaving a trail of scalped Nazis. They plan to destroy a cinema full of top brass but the young Jewish cinema proprietress has a scheme of her own, as does the British army. As their plots collide bullets and blood are never far from the screen.

Dir: Pedro Almodovar
(Spain 2009. 120 mins)
Subtitled; original language Spanish
Following the death of corrupt stockbroker Ernesto Martel, blind screenwriter Harry Caine is asked by Martel’s son to help write a script that’s intended as an act of vengeance against his neglectful father. The plot thickens as we flash back to 1992 when Martel produced Girls and Suitcases, a movie Blanco directed before losing his sight. During the filming both men fall for wannabe actress Lena (Penelope Cruz) and another slower revenge is played out amid the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote. On-set comedy vies with off-set melodrama as Almodovar speculates on cinema itself, on its imagery, icons and capacity for secret observation.
John L Sullivan, Hollywood’s top director of lightweight hits, wants to make a serious social statement by filming ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’, a weighty novel about life on the breadline. Unfortunately his studio is expecting a sequel to ‘Ants in Your Pants of 1939’. As he knows nothing of poverty Sullivan decides to find out by going on the road as a hobo. Soon accident, mistaken identity and imprisonment teach him that things can get a bit too real. The Coen Brothers liked this classic satirical comedy so much they stole Sullivan’s movie title.

Dir: Sam Copland
(UK 2009. 96 mins)

During the German invasion of Western Europe a German sniper is sent to eliminate a British scout squad reporting on suspected German movements in the Ardennes. Whilst awaiting the opportunity to strike he thinks back to his friends, his training and his parents and begins to develop a sympathy for the British soldiers in his sights. With his own family under threat from the SS, can he afford to question his motives?

We are delighted to present this latest film from Gloucestershire-based director Sam Copland, shot on location in the Forest of Dean. The dialogue for the film was completely improvised, with the actors working closely with the director to develop back stories and personalities for their characters. Adrian Annis stars as as Sergeant William Phillpot, Adam Bambrough as Captain George Richards, Matt Curnier as Corporal John Peters, Kevin Horsham as Max Schnider , Neil Linpow as Private Paul Jenkins , James McCartney as Lance Corporal Harry Roberts , Simon Nader as Horst , Rob Talbot as Major Hans Ritter, James Thyier as Gottlieb and Cathy Griffiths as Malena Schnider.

The cast, crew and director will be on hand afterwards to answer questions.
Saturday 10th October at 10.45am

Benjamin Britten – A Time There Was
Dir: Tony Palmer
(UK 1979. 103 mins)

At a time when it was illegal to be openly homosexual, Britten and his lover Peter Pears faced up to a hostile world with unflinching dignity, producing a string of masterpieces that helped establish English music as internationally pre-eminent in the middle years of the 20th century. Contributors to this definitive portrait of the great composer include Leonard Bernstein, Sviatoslav Richter, Janet Baker, Julian Bream, Heather Harper, Imogen Holst, John Shirley-Quirk, Rudolf Bing and Henry Moore as well as Pears and Britten themselves.

Tony Palmer is one of the leading directors of music documentaries and historical drama films in the world. In the 60s he worked for Ken Russell and Jonathan Miller at the BBC before achieving considerable notoriety with All My Loving, a revolutionary examination of rock n’ roll and politics. Since then his hundred or so films have won scores of international prizes including the Prix d’Italia, twice. We are privileged to welcome him again to the Guildhall.
