DESCRIPTION:Richard Cox Exhibition
Subterranean Architecture Stepwells in North Western India & the Jagmandir Series
Private View: Thursday 18 March 2010, 6-8pm
Exhibition running from 18 March-9 April 2010
Summerfield Gallery, Pittville Studios
Stepwells, which have been built in India for over a thousand years, were constructed to provide access to groundwater and to retain water from the annual monsoon in desert regions. As their names suggest the means of this access was by way of a series of steps, descending from the ground level as the water recedes. The nature of these steps can be simple or complex and their size varies and designs are unusual. This exhibition looks at subterranean architecture.
