Dir: Andrzej Wajda
(Poland 2007. 122 mins)
Subtitled; original language Polish
In 1940 fifteen thousand Polish officers were secretly massacred by Soviet troops in a Russian internment camp, a war crime which went unacknowledged for five decades. Wajda, whose own father died in the carnage, explores the impact of this national tragedy on various women whose loved ones never returned. With its mournful score (by Krzysztof Penderecki), muted cinematography and restrained performances this is a work of sober commemoration which builds to a startlingly horrific climax.
