Mabel lives in a shantytown. She works both as an entertainer at children’s parties and as a prostitute. When she is twenty she meets Martin, a lawyer who is about to turn forty and has decided to flee from what he considers a ‘too predictable’ death. Martin leaves his wife and the law firm where he works, and goes to live in a motorcaravan. While he is working in a car wash, attracting customers dressed as a bird, he meets Mabel. They are attracted to each other and eventually fall in love. Some time later Mabel finds out she is HIV positive. As Martin’s love helps her overcome successive bouts with death, Mabel’s love enables Martin to discover meaning in his own life.
