Subterranean Architecture Stepwells in North Western India & the Jagmandir Series

Private View: Thursday 18 March 2010, 6 – 8pm
Exhibition running from 18 March – 9 April 2010
Summerfield Gallery, Pittville Studios

Stepwells, which have been built in India for over a thousand years, were constructed to provide access to groundwater and to retain water from the annual monsoon in desert regions. As their names suggest the means of this access was by way of a series of steps, descending from the ground level as the water recedes. The nature of these steps can be simple or complex and their size varies and designs are unusual. This exhibition looks at subterranean architecture.

Developing Multiplatform Ideas

Next course dates: 19 – 21 March 2010, plus 7 weeks online

Skillset bursaries are available to fund up to 80% of your costs

What is multiplatform? What makes a strong multiplatform project? How can you develop great cutting edge ideas, then frame and pitch them to get commissions?

Richard Williams (Head of Multiplatform Productions at BBC Vision) will equip you to face current industry challenges during a 2-day residential, followed by 7 weeks of part-time supported learning online.

Develop your understanding of the multiplatform world (broadcast, online, gaming and mobile) – new opportunities and trends, shifts in audience behaviours, developments in technologies and content, emerging development processes and current commissioning needs.

Generate, develop and pitch your own multiplatform ideas. This intensive opportunity allows you to develop an individual project with hands-on support from industry experts – an idea you have in development, or a new response to a current commissioning brief.

Social notworking for all in PR, traditional media, marketing, communications & especially social media – across Gloucestershire and surrounding counties

go to – http://gloucs3pointzero.eventbrite.com/ to register

What is 3.0: Tweetdrinks?
Tweetdrinks is an open environment for social drinking and “notworking” night for anyone in PR, marcomms, and media in the Gloucestershire Area (but by all means bring others) who consider themselves a geek (our definition: into social media) or involved in all/any aspects of PR & marketing.

The only important part is that they like to have a drink, meet similar people, talk to each other and have a good night.

If this is a success we’ll look to bring other 3.0 events such as social media and marketing/PR experts and speakers into the region to help educate, inform and inspire people & businesses.

What is Jelly?
Jelly is a casual working event. It’s taken place in over a hundred cities where people have come together (in a person’s home, a coffee shop, or an office) to work for the day. We provide chairs and sofas, wireless internet, and interesting people to talk to, collaborate with, and bounce ideas off.

You bring a laptop (or whatever you need to get your work done) and a friendly disposition.

Watch this video about Jelly, or read about it in Wired.

Why do you do this?
Jelly started in NYC in February of 2006 when roommates Amit and Luke realized that they loved working from home, but they missed the creative brainstorming, sharing, and camaraderie of a traditional office. (Office politics, not so much.)

So they started inviting friends to come work from their home one day a week. They soon found that working in close proximity to new and interesting people every couple of weeks resulted in new ideas and interesting conversations.

Emboldened by their early success, they made it a more regular thing. Jelly was born.

Who can come to Jelly?
Anyone!

We see a lot of designers, developers, and internet types, but we’ve also had musicians, cooks, sound designers, tea sommeliers, product designers, photographers, writers, and more.

Some of us are entrepreneurs or freelancers. Others work in an office most of the time, but work at Jelly for fresh ideas and a change of pace.

No matter what you do or what you create, you’re welcome to come to Jelly and share your talent and learn from others.

When is the next one?
The very first Gloucestershire Jelly Day is on Friday 9th April from 9.30am – 4.30pm, Llanthony Warehouse, Gloucester Docks

Limited places! Book Now by Clicking Here!

James Wright’s intensely observed paintings on seasoned oak panels revisit the work of artists from the Early and High Renaissance and Flemish Schools, with particular interest in artists such as Rogier van der Weyden.

The traces of depictions such as The Deposition, The Passion, The Vanitas and The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian are recast in urban contemporary settings, and their narratives reconfigured through the accoutrements of inner-city street furniture such as graffiti, rubbish bags, cardboard boxes, traffic cones and unwanted possessions. Wright uses a vocabulary of symbols and motifs, often from History Painting but many of his own making to denote the themes of the original works he is revisiting. Within these works the historic and the contemporary are dramatically conflated in such a manner that the art of painting is once again rendered relevant through its mediation via the contemporary urban landscape.

James Wright graduated form the Royal College of Art in 2007 and has exhibited both nationally and internationally.

He has been a prize winner in the Jerwood Drawing Prize and Jerwood Contemporary Painters. His work is included in numerous public and private collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Thursday 22 April 2010, 6.15pm
