1. WHAT IS THE GLOUCESTERSHIRE MEDIA GROUP [The GMG]?

The Gloucestershire Media Group (The GMG) was formed in 2003 to support the development, integration, and expansion of media companies, freelancers and activity in Gloucestershire.

The GMG remains a "not for profit organisation" that currently receives funding, along with 4 other clusters across the South West, from the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) managed locally via the South West Screen (SWS). The aims is simply to "inspire, promote and support a long term sustainable future for the film, television and digital content sector in the South West".

The group is managed by a board of directors who all provide an increasing amount of time and resource on a voluntary basis. The job of the board is primarily to ensure that all funding received is spent as wisely as possible, for the benefit of the membership, the development of the industry within Gloucestershire and the growth of the Group.

The GMG has no shareholders as it is limited by guarantee through named company members (i.e. the Board). Decisions are made at a board level (by these company members) in consultation with and where appropriate, the general subscription or GMG membership (i.e. you).

As such, certain principles associated with organisations that have responsibilities to shareholders for example, do not apply to the GMG. It remains our intention to be as democratic as possible and going forward I think we will see wider consultation playing a larger part.

GMG EVENTS AND NETWORKING

Monthly networking events are a key element of The GMG’s activity and provide opportunities for members to interact in an informal setting. One event is held per month (last Wednesday) on an industry-related topic, with quarterly meetings arranged to reach a wider audience. Highlights from previous events include Phil Erhart of Apple Europe on the future of Apple professional media software, Debbie Isitt director of Confetti and, of course, The GMG pub quiz!

TRAINING

In 2006 The GMG successfully secured significant funding from the Learning & Skills Council (through the European Social Fund) to deliver a unique training initiative for the media industry in Gloucestershire. The project, known as GMG-Train, is a partnership with Cirencester Media Academy and Gloscat Media & Arts, and will be delivering a raft of free training over the next few years. Whether you are an established freelancer looking to gain new skills, a recent graduate trying to get in to the industry or a media-business owner who is looking to grow, GMG-Train will offer something for you.
